CHAPTER FIFTEEN

My heart raced. "I… I guess I should have mentioned that little detail."

"Well, you are a fully transformed vampire," Clara said. "You should be able to travel as you please."

I leaned against the wall. "What did she say?"

"About you being here?" Clara asked.

I exchanged a worried expression with Hale.

"She was mostly upset about her mother, who's apparently alive." Clara raised an eyebrow.

I looked away. "That's the rumor."

Hale laughed.

I shot her an annoyed expression.

"Sorry."

Clara stepped closer to me. "Your grandmother escaped."

"What? But she's not a prisoner."

"Apparently she felt that way. She never was one who liked to be told what to do."

I ran my hands through my hair and then stared at Clara. "You knew her before she was killed. What was—I mean, is—she like?"

"I'm not sure how much death changes an Asrai, but she's always been power hungry. It worked for them when they were king and queen, but now there's no real place of authority for her."

"But my mother has always told me how giddy Grandmother was about bringing back the Fyrsturae and reinstating them to the throne."

Clara didn't look convinced. "Truthfully, I think they were more interested bringing back Ida."

"Oh… that can't be good." My stomach felt like it dropped to my knees. I glanced at Hale and Clara, knowing the efforts my parents had gone to kill Ida. "You don't think she's going to try to bring her back?"

Clara frowned. "I'd say that's a definite possibility."

"What am I going to do?" I asked.

"I'm not really sure what we can do. Your grandmother has resources we may not even know about. She could go into hiding with someone who no one knows about."

I slunk down, still against the wall. "What's going to happen if she brings back Ida?"

Clara shrugged, looking disheartened. "Only time will tell."

"Well, what was she like?" Hale asked, helping to steady me. "I mean, she couldn't have been that bad. I know Eylin's grandparents fought on our side of the werewolf war. Without them, none of the Fyrsturae would have been awakened, and they allowed Aunt Alexis to wake up Uncle Alre. It was their second-in-commands that were the real enemies—the parents of the one Aunt Alexis created her tenth line with."

"Geez," I said. "I didn't realize you paid such close attention to your history studies."

"I can paint my nails and pay attention at the same time."

"What you say is true," Clara said, "but there's a lot more to the story. Most of it probably never made it into the history scrolls."

"Can we discuss this over some glasses of blood?" Hale asked.

"Good idea," Clara said.

We went back downstairs to where we had eaten earlier. The servants brought out glasses and two pitchers of blood. I sat quietly as Clara and Hale drank the pitchers empty.

"You don't want any?" Clara asked.

"Too sour for my tastes."

"Oh, that's right. You prefer dragon blood, which I don't keep."

"I understand," I said. "It's poison to most vampires."

"Do you want anything else?"

I shook my head. "I just want to hear more about my grandmother.
